CERAMICS

CARINAJUNE CERAMICS will be participating in the OPEN STUDIOS ART TOUR 2016 in Santa Cruz County for the first year ever! My studio at East Cliff and 24th Avenue will be open from 11 am to 5 pm, October 1st, 2nd, 15th, & 16th. Stop by if you can!

Carina fell in love with throwing ceramics over 15 years ago while staying in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. She knew with her first pot (an ashtray, of course) that she found something that she could truly be passionate about. And years later, the feeling of clay being shaped by Carina's hands is still magical.

Carina creates functional ceramics using midfire clay and glazes. She mixes glazes and fires her work in her garage studio. Each piece is thrown on the wheel and carved or altered by hand. Carving is very therapeutic, taking Carina away to the elements of nature that inspire her art. Without a stencil or pattern, she carves away the clay based on the shape of each piece and her mood/inspiration. Also, Carina will cutout or add shapes in the clay to accent the piece, while still maintaining functionality. Some glazes react differently depending on the thickness of the glaze becoming more saturated and breaking in the recessed or altered areas and when fired, highlighting the beauty in each carved or altered piece.
